Delta Flyer ST:Voyager Motion Control Model.

Hey All. Been browsing some of the amazing models people have been making - and i'm in awe of you all.

I thought i would share a model i built 6 years ago now - and is currently living in a wooden crate under my stairs. I decided to make a motion control model of the Delta Flyer from Star Trek Voyager as its a model no one had made. I know the actual model used in the series was CG but i thought i could make a physical model of it and this is the outcome.

Took 9 weeks to create, it had about 300 leds inside all lights independently controlled from a control box. Main shell is moulded fibreglass, took ages to make the plug. It has pop out nacelles - rear impluse thrusters - and landing gear - all pneumatic and remote controlled, mounting points on the front, rear, top and bottom and interchangable canopys for black, blue or green screen work.

I keep meaning to make a glass coffee table to display it but sadly havent yet.

Andrew.

Re: Delta Flyer ST:Voyager Motion Control Model.

uh.... holy moley that's one heck of an amazing first post! Welcome to the boards!

I would love to see some more pictures of this amazing model. It's really impressive considering there were no physical models of the delta flyer.

Wow - I'm totally speechless - I want to hurry up and finish this post so I can go back and look at your pictures again.

Oh and if you don't feel like building that glass coffee table - feel free to just send the model to me.

Wow!!! That is impressive!!! Nice first post, lol. How big is this monster? 300 LEDs seems like an enormous amount unless this thing is huge. Please post more photos!

Re: Delta Flyer ST:Voyager Motion Control Model.

Thanks guys. Appreciate it.

I have plenty of pics - have yet to shoot it on video - im now a full time film director so i've gone away from the model making side for the time being, its 1/32nd scale or there abouts - finding info was a bit of a nightmare but i found some plans somewhere. I own a Red camera so could do some greenscreen work at somepoint when i get a chance.

Yes 300 leds or at least thats what it felt like when soldering them all its been 6 years since i made it - some were miniature ones just to create green glows in the Borg areas to a massive cluster in the nacelles and thursters - took ages to work out all the seperate circuits.

I was a pro - prolific model maker a few years ago making all sorts till i changed jobs, ive attached a Goldeneye prop pic, im gonna post over in that thread at somepoint which i think those guys will like.

Andi.

Re: Delta Flyer ST:Voyager Motion Control Model.

I have a few pics of the build, they are all on an old PC and managed to dig out a few.

Various pics there of different bits, the plug was made from foam based chemiwood - sanded and car body filler to create the final surface. Then a two part mould created, still have that somewhere. Thin GRP shell moulded and a lot of sanding and internal structure. Had to fit a metal armature in there as well for the mounting and all the pneumatic equipment - so not too much space.

Re: Delta Flyer ST:Voyager Motion Control Model.

Ive always loved the look of star trek ships, they makes more sense structurally then most of the ships from star wars, where the parts seems tacked on or exposed way to much for a "military vessel".

Re: Delta Flyer ST:Voyager Motion Control Model.

I'm a bit late to the game with this post but I found it in a "Delta Flyer" search and what a result.
Did anyone get this guy's e-mail address?

I've tried to PM him but this thread was started in January.

If anyone has his contact details and would be willing to pass them on you can PM me here.
Thank you

That is really awesome. My wife and I have just been re-watching some Voyager as well so it's very timely for me.

Ah! Really TOP-NOTCH work! The Delta Flyer is a fantastic shuttle and yours it is by far the best replica I've ever seen. That is really something to be proud of.

Re: Delta Flyer ST:Voyager Motion Control Model.

Thank everyone for your comments much appreciated. I've not had a chance to get back on here for a while, i've been busy shooting a lot of films and adverts of late.

The model is still under my stairs, will try and get it out over the next few months and see if i can film a video of it.

Andi :-)

Re: Delta Flyer ST:Voyager Motion Control Model.

I know you probably don't need the money and all, but people would be willing to pay good money for copies of this as a kit. It is spectacular and would make a unique addition to any Trekkie or modelers collection. Congrats on a job well done, you should be proud.
