AT-AT build progress
Hi guys,
I own a few SS models/display pieces already, such as a MR Falcon, Sideshow premium format Scout and speeder, and a Capt. Cardboard X-wing (not built by me). I have never attempted a studio scale model before and but have always fancied giving it a go. I bought a AT-ATRon as I LOVE the at-at's, and have wanted one in my collection for some time now. I did have this up for sale some time back but decided to keep it and make a go of it. Phil (TK1680) was very kind and sent me a disk with pics of his build - this disk is worth it's weight in gold and has helped me out no end! - Thanks again dude! I have made some slow progress to date and promise to get some pictures up very soon to show you guys how I'm getting on. I do have a quick question though about a particular piece of the kit that I am hoping those of you that have made this kit will be able to help with. The head section requires a piece of wood gluing vertically inside it. How have you guys gone about doing this? I have drilled out and sanded down the back of the head for the neck section to slot into, but I cannot work out how to glue in the piece of wood for the bungee cord to attach to! I appreciate any help you guys can offer - either on this part or any other tips you may have that will assist me with this beast!! Thanks all, Smally. |

Re: AT-AT build progress
Technically this at at is not studio scale. Try the general modeling section

Re: AT-AT build progress
I would ditch the bungee cord and resin neck in favor of using carburetor hose and an armature for inside the neck. You can build an armature using ball and socket parts found at the link below or fabricate one yourself. I used the parts from Armaverse since it's pretty hard to find threaded balls for the joint anywhere else. If you use this method the carb hose is sufficient since it will not carry any weight.

Re: AT-AT build progress
Thats the way id play it Mike, alloy convoluted hose, and a metal armature, very simple to do, and the hose will allow you to pose the head till your hearts content....jeez, wish i was building this
.Pics Smally, very glad you decided to slog on with the build, its the biggest thing im missing for my Hoth fix...an ATAT, id go the MR route, but they are overpriced and SUCK in the grand scale. lee |

Re: AT-AT build progress
Mike, I recently picked up an AT-ATRon myself. Which size range of Armaverse bits did you use for the neck?

Re: AT-AT build progress
I think i used Phase 2 with a medium or short plate. They are sold out of those. If i was going to do it with what they have left there I would use the 4 dimple trap plate in the middle, 2 threaded ball bearings on each size, with the threaded rods/bolts connected to the body and head. It would give you side to side and up and down motion. Considering how cheap the discontinued stuff is there right now it's worth a shot.

Re: AT-AT build progress
Hey guys, thanks for all of the feedback as well as the alternative ideas.
Mslz22 - thanks for the links to these. Just so I can gain an understanding what I'm actually looking at here, what size are these ball and socket parts? Did you actually make the at-at with this construction yourself? If so is there any chance of some pictures please mate? Pics of my progress will be up tomorrow! Thanks again all, Smally. |

Re: AT-AT build progress
If you follow the link below they have a PDF with actual size. I did use their parts on an AT AT Ron that i had years ago, that i do not have anymore. They worked well and looked better than the resin neck. i don't know if i have any pics but i will look. I think what i would do it to get the 4 dimple trap and 2 ball bearings, once you have those you can go to a local hardware store to find threaded rod x2 that is the correct length. connect the body to the 1rst ball bearing, then the trapezoid part in the middle, 2nd ball bearing connects to the head.
hope that helps mike http://www.armaverse.com/PDF/Phase2_parts.pdf Quote:

Re: AT-AT build progress
Anyone has an idea about the size/diameter of the carb.hose used on the studio scale AT-AT.
And if so where can i get these. I've checked several at halffords but they all come with dents in the wire and i think not enough wire rings per cm. I hope someone can help me. Thanks |

Re: AT-AT build progress
Hey Smally
It's a bit awkward to measure accurately on the model but it's about 60mm dia or 2 1/4 inches dia...there abouts... Phil |

Re: AT-AT build progress
Hi guys,
I'm really sorry for the slowness of my updates, it's just with all of the London riots and small pockets of looting/trouble kicking off in the UK I've had to work some crazy hours. As soon as my next rest days come round I'll get the pics up! Cheers, Smally. |
