Bigturc's Tie Bomber thread

Hey guys,
I'm gonna begin my Tie Bomber soon .. Guy and Lee inspired me .. not to say all the other amazing threads that we have around ..

Was not too hard to come up with a list of everything needed on this bad boy .. for history's sake, I'm gonna list everything again in a clear list :

[qty, manufacturer, scale, name and current average price]

2x MPC AMT ERTL Darth Vader Tie Fighter -- 15$
1x MPC/Airfix 1:24 Ju87 German Stuka Dive Bomber -- 90$

5x Hasegawa 1:72 Leopold German Railway Gun K5(E) MB28 (31028) -- 30$
5x Hasegawa 1:72 Morser Karl German 600mm Railway Carrier MB32 (31032) -- 20$

4x Tamiya 1:35 20mm Flak 38 Flakvierling 38 (35091*1000) -- 10$
4x Tamiya 1:35 German Hanomag Sdkfz 251/1 (35020*2200) -- 10$
1x Tamiya 1:35 U.S Medium Tank M3 Lee Mk.1 (35039*1600) -- 25$
1x Tamiya 1:35 German 88mm Gun Flak36/37 (35283) -- 30$
1x Tamiya 1:35 20mm Flak 38 MIT DS.AH.51 (35102) -- ???
1x Tamiya 1:35 British 25PDR Field Gun -- 20$

1x Tamiya 1:700 HMS Rodney Battleship -- 10$
1x Tamiya 1:700 German BattleCruiser Scharnhorst WL B118 (77518 or new) -- 25$
1x Tamiya 1:700 Japanese Aircraft Carrier Shinano (77024*1300) -- ???
4x Tamiya 1:700 IJN Aircraft Carrier Junyo (31212**2400) -- 20$
4x Tamiya 1:700 Battleship Prince of Wales (31615*2000) -- 25$
1x Tamiya 1:700 Battleship YAMATO (77009) -- 15$

2x Airfix 1:144 Apollo Saturn V (A11170 or new) -- 40$
2x Airfix 1:24 Hawker Harrier AV 8AGr (18001-4 or new) -- 90$

I'm gonna start this from Stu's starter kit and go from there .. some pieces will be castings, while I plan to buy other kits that are either cheap or worth buying ..

I already started a thread in the junkyard .. but I'm guessing most of you guys don't read it .. so again, if you guys have any extra parts/kits/castings in the list and are willing to send them my way (for a price of course), let me know .. I'm trying to not burn an arm and a leg on this ... for now!

This is an introduction to kit bashing for me, I've done resin kits before but this is a first!

I'm gonna buy the Vader Tie as it's definitely worth it, the rest depends on the deal I can get!

Cheers and lmk if you can help!

NOTE All pictures of this thread can be found high rez here : http://www.pbase.com/bigturc/ss_tie_bomber

Re: Bigturc's Tie Bomber thread

Kit I found that had the proper IDs

Saturn, 25PDR and Rodney

Other kits that were not with proper IDs

Shinano, Yamato which are the retooled versions .. argg

88mm Gun Flak 36/37

Guys, can you confirm that the 88mm 35283 the same as 35017? I found this post about it, but it's not been confirmed! If so, I'll go back and buy it ..

Thanks Scratchy, as you can see in your list, the 88mm doesn't list the 35017 as being valid, thus the question .. you can update yours now I guess! By the way, my list in the first post mostly comes from yours from some threads here .. so thanks for sharing!

Yeah, they definitely have a load of stock. They're called Udisco and they're Canada's largest hobby wholesellers! Guys over there know everything .. unfortunately, I was sad to come back from there with almost nothing in hands .. so either I'll order from them or online but shipping to Canada is killing me! :S

Re: Bigturc's Tie Bomber thread

Thanks everyone!!
I just realized I needed 2 Saturn .. Jee, must have been too excited to be around so many kits!

The styrene for the wings, I read 0.75 was the thickness needed .. I thought I saw they had 0.080 and 0.060 .. or perhaps, I just sniffed too much glue lately! :|

Now, to order Stu's kit and my MPC Vader!!! More to come!

Re: Bigturc's Tie Bomber thread

Guys,
I got a chanxe on the Tamiya German 88mm Flak Gun 36/37 kit but it's missing the C sprue, the rest is all there. I think I only need the A & B for the Bomber .. so am I correct in my assumption that it's safe to buy it and I'll have anything I want inside?

Do you know if there's anything on that C-sprue that I'd need for anything else that would come to your mind? Just in case I get SS crazy and need the kit for another model!

On another note, where's the best available online reference for the Bomber .. I know there was a set that was public, but I just can't find it anymore! :|

Edit: Found here!

First time ordering stuff from Plastruct here .. I was wondering what else on this build could be of use from them that I'm missing?.. I plan on ordering :

1x 91103 5x 0.030 styrene sheets (7"x12")
2x 2" HEMI HEAD FOR TB-200 VHH-200
2x 2" ELLIPTICAL HEAD FOR TB-200 VHD-200

NOTE I order 2 of each as I'll probably mess them up so better safe then sorry!

What's with the lines on the exterior of the wing extensions? Are these plastruct parts too?

Last edited by Bigturc; 03-18-2011 at 12:20 PM. Reason: It's VHD-200 .. not VHE-200!

They come in a bag of two, or the ones I ordered did.

I think those are kit parts but are still to be found yet !

So you can also order some styrene rods from plastruct, cant remember the exact diameter, but just buy several diameters, they'll be handy in the future on other builds that wouldnt be a loss !

You can also order a 0,5 mm and 1 mm styrene sheet, you'll probably need to build the kind of boxes at the wing roots and the the central box.

Re: Bigturc's Tie Bomber thread

Guys, does anyone of you know anything about the Tamiya 88mm Gun Flak36/37 # MM-117A? I found this but have no idea, is that a complete kit to replace 35017/35283, or just parts or some rip off/bootleg?!

The box's side is the same, except that you have Model Rectifier Corp. under the Tamiya sign and the kit ID is on the bottom left corner KIT NO. MM-117A.

Can't find any info anywhere on this and I don't wanna end up buying useless kits ..

Re: Bigturc's Tie Bomber thread

As I said earlier, any Tamiya 36/37 88mm will do the trick. Only the color of the plastic changes and sometimes there are figures included in the kit.
