Re: Battlestar Australis

A bit more done. The body is now on. Just needs some adjustment & lining up. Need to cut the acrlic bottom now to wrap around the armature. Should maybe have thought about that before getting the acrylic cut but I guess thats all part of the learning experience. Am happy to have this on & will also connect the arms.
Getting the engine section onto the armature was not fun. I snapped the back brace in the process. Just waiting for my SS Raider parts for the bottom & the rear section is amost complete. I could have my engine plate finished also but think I may rebuild it for the third time as I am still not happy with it....

Re: Battlestar Australis

Got the bady aligned & the floor on. Am so stoked to have the floor on as it had to fit through the armature... I just marked where the pipe was, drew a line though the centre & scored the acrylic with a stanley knife about 50 times then snapped. Luckilly it was a clean break Have had a few not so clean breaks using that method. I have also in the last day snapped both side panels where I made the slots for the arms to sit in I then got my mate Mr Dremel & cleared out the pipe cavity on the 2 halves & she sat in nice & snug. Will get the raised panels bevelled noe & scribe the top section. I should also have the arms on within the week. maybe

Re: Battlestar Australis

Just recieved my V1 SS Raider ready for some Dremel action This is used on the bottom of the engine section. Have also started moulding up some parts. This was one for a friend that I can use also to save the valuable donor parts.

Thanks Julien. I use 'Weldon #16'. Its an acrylic glue that melts the plastic together slightly. Its excellent for acrylics & styrene. Cures fast but gives enough time for alignment adjustments. Its also very noxious.

Re: Battlestar Australis

I could send you a tube Julien?

So just shredded a perfectly good Salzo V1 Raider to start detailing the bottom engine deck. The moto tool carved her up real fast. Always do cutting & drilling of resin outside & wear a mask & goggles. I learnt the hard way. Trust me. Am happy to have these to build this section up now.

Thanks Jase, but I doubt this kind of stuff would be allowed in a plane ? lol
I think I can find something similar here, maybe under another brand... Thanks for the offer though !

Man you're crazy, cutting a kit like that !
And wow all that resin dust... I'm affraid with a tiny amount of resin dust on my workbench, I couldnt cut the resin like that lol even with gloves and mask ! Obviously you didnt wear gloves, I hope you were wearing at least a mask...

Re: Battlestar Australis

Have built the neck & arms after some time off the project on other things. Using the new skills of phot scaling I have learnt am now working primarilly from scaled photos & kit parts. Build is preogressing nicely now with the confidence of using these new techniques I have learnt. Am about to start the head & Landing Bays very soon. I will not detail models before base structures are finished any more as flipping the models to work can be very hazardous. Just a learning curb as I am still a beginner. I discovered that the neck(and most of this studio model) are asymetrical meaning not even on port & starboard side in many places. I have incorporated these inacuracies into my build following the scaled photos as closely as possible. Thanks for looking

Re: Battlestar Australis

Finally had the last of the sections laser cut to build the head & landing bays.
Am really excited to get these sections built up so I can flip her over & start on the coffin & support arms.

Re: Battlestar Australis

Those look great, Jase. It all looks great. Seeing this makes me think that if I ever do another huge SS model, I will have to start getting things laser cut. I must go through hundreds of X-acto blades and a whole lot of sand paper in a single build.

Re: Battlestar Australis

Thanks Rick.

Have started assembleing the landing bays.
These are quite tricky to get right so need to make sure Im checking the reference.
I also need to fix my neck as I didn't make detachable forgetting I needed to have access for lighting....
So will work on fixing that today.

Hey Michael its good to see you back.
Hope your Traithalons went well mate.
The Escape Pod is still on the bench.
Just having a crack at the Battlestar as I got the last of my acrylics cut to finish the superstructures so I can concentrate on kit bashing
I also have the frame & hulls cut for my ANH Devestator that I will post later.
You will love that.
Stay around mate I can always do with good advice when Im stuck on something.

Hi Jason, your build looks fantastic mate! Do you know a chap called Brad, up near Brizzy? He was building studio scale Battlestars a few years back. He used to be a member here, not sure if he still is. Anyway, fantastic work!
