    Jul 28, 2012 - Apoxie Sculpt Questions #1

Okay, I've read about lots or people using it and I want to give it a try. From what i have read it is versatile and pretty strong. I think I remember someone saying they even vacuum formed over it. One of the things I want to try is using it to make or extend some small vac bucks. Thoughts?

I have some questions for those of you who have used it. I am trying to decide to between the 1/4 lb to give it a try, or go with the more economical 1 lb kit. My questions are:

    1. Does it have a shelve life? I don't want to buy a bigger tub just to throw it out if I don't use it by a certain date.

    2. Does anyone know how many cubic inches per pound?

    3. Where do you buy from? It looks like it can be found on amazon.com and ebay, but the price is either the same or higher than buying from the Aves website. I haven't done any shipping research yet...

    4. What color do you prefer? I'm thinking a neutral, lighter color is probably best for filling and sculpting on models.

Any other thoughts on the stuff?

    Thanks

Mine is old enough now that I test a small bit before using, but it still works just fine. Its probably over five years old.

I think I got mine straight off their web site.

I use it a lot, one part can dry out a little over time, but can usually be revived a bit with water.

I've used it for years, and yes, it can be vaced over. I't's very durable stuff. I bought a statue kit, and some of the details I felt needed changing...used apoxie sculpt, and it bonds great to the original material, and blends well.

I would say the only draw back, is if you're a "slow" sculptor, and use it for sculpting, it may start to set up before you get what you want out of it.

I've been using it for years and love it. Aves has been great to work with - great customer service. Luckily, the hobby shop by me has started carrying at less the cost of ordering it directly.

Excess can be stored in the freezer and used later after submerging in hot water. However, I found it is much harder to work with than a fresh batch.

Yep, I also keep mine in the freezer.
That is what the company does too!
I've had mine since 2005 and it's still good.
Basically, it gets hard as rock when you use it.

    Its a great product to use and you shouldn't hesitate to buy it. In answer to your questions;

    1) I've had my large tub for four years and I'm just getting to the end of it. It will dry out more quickly as the level drops but I always spray some water in there after I've used it so the surface just looks "sweaty" and pack the space left with bubble wrap. Its remained as fresh as the day I bought it.

    2) No idea, but its heavy stuff, approximately the same density as plasticine. If you are just using it to repair bubbles, gaps, marks in resin models it will last a longtime. If you are going for larger usage go for the large tub, ultimately it will cost you much less though the postage stings a little.

    3) Get mine from a taxidermist in the UK. They are more plentiful in the US so you might get more of a range of choice and price but it doesn't seem to drop much in cost. Its a class product in a limited market so it can maintain its price easily without attracting a discount.

    4) Mines a light grey/green when mixed.Never had any issue with colour bearing in mind you're going to have to put down a strong primer undercoat anyway to paint on it. Have to say I've not had any issues with its performance with any paint once its primed.

Still undecided? Its quick to use, sets rock hard and is sandable in 24hrs, leaves your hands clean and takes to nearly every surface I've applied it on. Costly perhaps but utterly unreplaceable as a product once you've used it.

I've also got it for my Ironman suit .. basically, I use it to build the tabs in my armor to join pieces together!! And it works a treat!!! The only con for me is the dry time, I was used to get epoxy paste which dries hard as metal in about 10 minutes but it does cost a lot more than Aves!

I also got it locally, basically, the same price as Aves but without shipping!

You can check what I did with it in the build thread in my sig!

^ As an owner of one of the original Tychus statues, I'm still blown away by the detailing in your sculpt.

yeah apoxie is awesome stuff. I'm still using a kit from well over 2 years ago. It does harden over time, but you'll just need to knead it more before using it.

As for color, I've found that some of the brighter/more pigmented shades can stain your hands / work area (esp. jet black. woof), but most of it will clean out with soap and water. Wearing latex gloves while using it might not be a terrible idea either.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think I have found a place in town that carries it. He is currently out, but expects to be restocked by the end of the week.

I got my last batch at a swimming pool supply store. They use it to patch holes because the stuff cures under water.

I use this all time in my figurue customization. Blends right in and is so easy to sculpt with:

Note: These are not 100% apoxy sculpt but I use it for kitbashing these and blending the parts together when I have a pose I like.

On average I go through about 8 pounds a year. LOVE it. Milliput is CRAP by comparison.

I used a crap ton on a pattern I mastered a handful of years ago - ever since then it's been my go-to putty.

4StarCustoms, Darth Infamous, Moffeaton - I find the product really useful for filling gaps and that sort of thing but for complex creations like these - I can't believe what I'm seeing - those are amazing creations.
