Anh Escape Pod Scratchbuild

Gday everyone.
I am hopeing to build all the Star Wars model miniatures over a hopefully long life & am starting with the ANH miniatures(though most are far from small)
The Escape Pod is a nice model & after seeing my friend Rick Ingalsbe scratch build one for the movie '77 thought I would ask him to send me some buckets to give it ago.
This will be another long project as I am in no rush to finish but anxious to get started.
Like the other projects I will endevour to share whatever I learn in regards to part identification, maps & kit list.
I guess this will be my build thread & will start a 'reference' thread for the 'parts maps', 'kit lists' & other associated model research.
As I am a freshman at the studio scale replica building I am hoping everyone will chip in with some guidance & knowlege along the way.

So firstly Rick ent me some buckets he used for his build.
They are 2.5Quarts.
Whilst using the search engine to go back & see what other threads had been started found one where a 5Quart bucket was advised to be right?

Can someone confirm the size bucket to use before I get started?

Also whilst going through my Saturn V kits noticed that a part used for the main thrusters in the new kit has been 'retooled'.
The part needed for the Thrusters has ribs running down the side.
The part in the new kit does not have the ribbing so the vintage kit is needed for an 'accurate' build.

The pictures are just me playing with some parts to see where to go.
I will start the identification maps today with parts I know & will also add the kit list that was started in another thread by 'Rambo' that we can continue on with.

Thanks.

Re: Anh escape pod scratchbuild

It's good to see you tackling this project in a well organized way, Jason.

I'm guessing the only way to figure out the bucket size is to compare with kit part dimensions. It doesn't seem likely that all paint buckets of the same volumes would have the same length/height dimensions to achieve the same volume. It wouldn't need to be a constant. That difference between 2.5 and 5 quart should be pretty easy to eyeball if you had them side by side though. That's a good first mystery to get out of the way.

Re: Anh Escape Pod Scratchbuild

Jase,

At WonderFest I had a good chance to see a very accurate Pod replica in the studio scale display. The overall size of that build is pretty close to the same size as mine.

It's good that you are taking your time with yours. Mine had to be built with a deadline, so I had no time to research parts. I literally threw it together in less than 2 weeks. It worked well for what it was made for, but I wish it could have been more accurate...

Re: Anh Escape Pod Scratchbuild

Rick your Pod is awsome buddy & has inspired this build.
You are very modest which is part of your good characture.
Thanks for sending me these buckets mate.
Its afantastic start to a hopefully a good build.
If I get anything as nice as what you built I will be happy.

Yeah, this is cool. The Escape Pod is one of my favorite ships, actually. It always reminded me of 2001: ASO.

Can't wait to see the results!

Re: Anh Escape Pod Scratchbuild

Thanks for the kind words. Hope I can pull it off.
So this afternoon Ive been head first into this model research.
I started some maps in the research thread & this afternoon have workd on the diameters of each section.
From scaled pictures & some kit parts Ive come up with the following. For now. Everything is subject to reworking though am confident Im close.
I laid some parts on the measurements I got for the engine base diameter & it looks pretty close to me.
Its amazing how the Sea Lab parts fit exactly snug into slots each side of the Saturn V rocket base.
Almost as if they were meant to be there
Im going to build my body from styrene.
Actually Lasse Henning did a beautiful build of this which he primarilly scratch built most of all the parts.
This one will use only actual donors though
Thanks for looking.
All feedback more than welcome.

Someone should CNC the body and make hollow rotocasted casts to use as a base. Great work here!

Re: Anh Escape Pod Scratchbuild

Alrighty Jase is consumed by yet another build.
I guess out of all the movies I am an ANH boy.
I saw the movie for the first time in 77 when I was 5 years old.
When I got out I asked my Nan & Grandad if I could go back in for the next session which they let me without hesitation. From then on in my life was changes.

So am working on the dimensions using kit parts & scaled photos.
Unfortunately the photo reference is few & far between on this subject so am relying on kit parts & luck.

I have quite a few of the donors with more on their way
I guess i am a SS adict now...

P.S The dimensions in the last post are not correct.

I hope to maybe have the base structure or frame worik finalised by the weekend.

Hey Jason: Risch33 had some pretty comprehensive drawings of that end of the pod. Supposedly to scale. Here are the impressive drawings...do they match up?

Re: Anh Escape Pod Scratchbuild

Be sure your top is correct - needs to be wider compared to what Ro made, to allow for that styrene detail. (Caveat - Rolando did a crazy good job, especially with available reference!)

Re: Anh Escape Pod Scratchbuild

Thanks Jason. I checked out your blog on your rebuild.I have to agree on Rolando's kit. It looks pretty dam straight to me. I found a guy who was building a 'yellow scale' 3D model of this in a random search. I attached the image to the dimensions thread. I scaled that picture up to 145% which seemed to bring it to the scale it needed to be. It fit the Sea Lab dome on the side view & all the kit parts lined up pretty nice on the bottom. Ive contemplated getting this CNC'd out of MDF at my plastic supplier. Just get the whole body shaped out which would be pretty kool. Heavy though so would need to hollow out the inside. Just a thought. Could then maybe Vaccuform the hull. That is something I have not attempted yet.
So inbetween creating a mess in my work shop with kits scattered everywhere Ive been assembleing some parts. Well disasembleing parts for the Pod.
Have taken the docking ring of the Saturn V part(thanks Eric for that Id) to place around the other Saturn V thruster base to create that lip we can see.
I have also taken the thruster houseings off the sides of the Saturn V houseing that are seen around the edge of the Pod rocket base.

Re: Anh Escape Pod Scratchbuild

Oh... Sorry friend~!
I was actually confused #9 of the 2nd pic and mis-IDed by Saturn V.
It's a bit small, right?

However, your working is very good~!

thanks Eric.

Re: Anh Escape Pod Scratchbuild

thats a butt load of work to make a small detail. I have a hard time ILM (in their efficiency) would have done it that way. i know i wasn't there, i just have a belief that they didn't do a lot of work for little payback.
OTOH, if it creates the right look, i'm all for that too! nice work thus far jason.

Hey Jason,

If you are satisfied, I'm glad.
However, I still think it looks a small compared to original?

thanks Eric.

Re: Anh Escape Pod Scratchbuild

Thanks. I have been sick the flu for pver 2 weeks & my concentration during that time was pathetic. Hopefully now I am somewhat better I can be on the ball. I have ordered 'Leaktite' 5 quarts buckeys that the dimensions of seem to be pretty much pn the money. They will yake a couple of weeks as hadnto get them shipped to a friend in the States that eill then send them on. I want to try the foam filling of yhe bucket as the ILM boys did.

Re: Anh Escape Pod Scratchbuild

Have been out sick for some time & just needing to catch up around the house, on bills & more importantly spend more ime with the kids. Im creeping back to the 'builds'(as I probably have more than I can handle going on...) & started to get the Pod together. I want to do the foam in the bucket technique but don't have any spare funds for a little while so decided to follow in Lasse's footsteps with construction in styrene. Things are coming together ok am happy to be building again. Theres not many pieces to find in the identification area & have collected 90% of whats been ID so far. Thanks for everyone's involvement in that process aswell. Idiscovered a couple of things when playing withthe paper buckets that may solve some queries about the construction of the Pod or may just be lucky coincidences. I will post that stuff in the referenece thread.
