This will be for a costume I am working on. So far the closest thing I can find is a $4000 replica. Not exactly in my price range. Was hoping for maybe a model kit or just off the shelf replica that is pretty close but wont break the bank. Maybe some of the members with experience in pirate props can help me out here. Thanks in advance.

Edit: found this one but its sold out and no price listed anyway. Probably alot as well.

The Iron Man version of 'Mark 1' as described in the title may be a little misleading as this thread isn't on the first Iron Man suit Tony Stark built in a cave, but instead is about MY first Iron Man prototype attempt which will be based on the Mark 3 design (Tony's first painted suit). I will start from absolute scratch with a simple foam suit and progress from there onto electronics, hydraulics and metal parts. I'm curious about how far I can get on these suits and won't stop until I get completely stuck! ;)

<img src="http://www.therpf.com/attachments/f24/prop-builders-iron-man-mark-i-prototype-mech-suit-ironman-mk1.png-186589d1368976227t" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.
I may do various suit types (MK 3 , 4 , 5 etc...) as I play around with ways of doing these, but my MK's will be based on the progression of my suits, and not the movie suit designs/marks. I love all the suits, but Mk III is among my favourites.

First things first, I need to see if my body shape/proportions will even fit into the suit without having to adjust the movie proportions too much. I'd feel a bit deflated if the suit ended up looking like a kids playsuit, with a big head or short arms etc.. To test this quickly, I decided it'd be best to just knock up a fast foam/card suit and see how that fits me. I realise I will need to adjust the overall scale to match my height.. which is about 5' 8". Maybe once the suit is on, I'd stand at around 5' 10" or more. :) I'm not sure how tall Iron Man in the movies is supposed to be, but I understand Robert Downey Jr is 5' 8 1/2" tall, so I guess the suit would add another couple of inches or more to that.

Can you guys fill me in on these pepakura files available? I'm assuming they're professional made files from the original movie images/files. I need something truely accurate. I could just buy a Hot Toys figure and scale that up, but I think to start a Pepakura file would be the easiest way to knock up suit for test fitting. I need to find out if I can move freely inside the suit before moving on. Who knows of the best quality files available?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Update:

It seems after doing some research that many of these Pepakura files are homemade. I would prefer something 'official' so won't have to worry about accuracy when selecting & printing them. What do you guys use as reference when creating these peps, and how do you go about it? Some of them do look very accurate when built up, but would feel more reassured if you could share how you translate your ref into the pep files? I don't plan to make peps myself, but intend to scale up an official maquette at some point. The pep files are just to help create a rough 1/1 figure in card or foam to test proportions and restrictions on movement.

I mostly show up as either Firefly's Capt. Malcolm Reynolds, or as my own Jedi Knight character "Benaiah Abishai". All of these were taken by my dad and can be found on his picture site. Danny's Photos : Events | SmugMug

I just finished my first coat of fiberglass cloth inside of my Iron Man helmet (very exciting!) As per the Hero Tutorials on YouTube, I used spray adhesive and coated the entire inside, stuck down the cloth, and put down the resin.

I have some areas where the cloth buckled up a bit on the ends or overlaps that I want to get in and "dremmel" out to make it look cleaner and smoother, but I also have some areas where the cloth lifted from the helmet and has created a "bubble".

I plan to remove the bubbles and lay more Fiberglass in there, but just wondering what the best way to do this was with a dremmel? If so, what attachments are best used? I am buying a flexible extension to make drememl more accessible to the small space.

I have a respirator, but am wondering if I am using a cutting bit (instead of sanding) on the dremmel, will I still have to wear long sleeves to prevent itchy fiberglass particles?

Hello guys and girls

Long time since I've been here...
But its nice to come back!

Some time ago I just had this idea that I really wanted to sculpt an life size Alien.
So I started over a month ago.
First idea was to make an Alien head as a part of costume which we wanted to use for "alienesque" photo session in a abandoned factory plant. Then, everything went like "hang on, I'm going to make full size sculpture!".

So I had a lower jaw and set of upper teeth along with the top of the Alien head I purchased some time ago.
Cast was bad, full of holes, untrimmed and looked like a piece of a poo.
So I did sculpt a new set of a jaw and upper teeth and cast them again.

<img src="http://www.therpf.com/attachments/f62/1-1-alien-sculpture-wip-alienmaking1.jpg-186545d1368961235t" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

Size:	445.3 KB
I was so happy with the result I did cast three sets of them! (which came handy later on when Alien collapsed during the night and broke his jaw)

Then I went to the pound shop and robbed it from every single hose they had in stock (hoover hose, shower, washing machine hoses and so on) - cashier looked at me in very very odd way...

I cast the bottom part of the neck in Easy-Flo plastic resin (no odour and its ready in about 10 minutes!)

I still wasn't happy with the look of the top of the head. I started to study the whole wikipedia book of knowledge about the Alien species and found out that adult Aliens had nice shaped and decorative heads. Young ones have their heads smooth.
So I started to sculpt the top of the head. And yeah, went to the pound-shop again to buy some more hoses...

At the end I did sculpt a tongue and sides of the jaw. Muscle -like sides are going to be made from translucent silicone and they are drying outside right now. Still there is loads to do before its going to be airbrushed, loads of sanding and trimming, but so far full head cast looks like that:

<img src="http://www.therpf.com/attachments/f62/1-1-alien-sculpture-wip-alienmaking5.jpg-186552d1368961831t" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.
Now, off for the chest sculpt and more visits to the pound shop :)
